Evelyn knelt over a deep basin filled with water from the sunken tub where Chase, Knox, and Teddy used to bathe. Her attention remained wholly focused on the stone of Metria, which she held submerged beneath the surface of the water with both hands. The pull of energy that the stone emitted was like a magnet drawing her own daylights to the surface. She could feel them rising, answering the call of the stone. Her skin grew translucent; the golden web of the daylights made itself visible beneath her skin, and then, as the two streams of energy met, she felt a wave of contentedness, and the same liquid calm she felt in Rystaâs enclosure.
The stone began to glow, its cracks and seams glittering from within. The water shimmered in the basin, blue and purple as if lit by the moon. She held the stone in the water for several minutes, allowing its essence to wash through her, flooding her with a sense of blankness. Peace.
When she judged it had been immersed long enough, she lifted the stone from the water and wrapped it in a hammock of Metrian scarves. The waters in the basin continued to glow. She got busy filling and stoppering bottles for tomorrowâs treatments. After all, if she felt this way when her daylights communed with the stone of Metria, then maybe, with time, the treatments would have a similar effect on the Exorians. It was proving harder than she had anticipated.
Maybe Iâm not strong enough, she thought to herself.
A sudden gust of wind came into the small room through the crack in the rock face that served as a window. The candle at the side of the tub flickered. She heard a voice say clearly: Get out!
Evelyn whipped around, looking for the source.
Theyâre coming! the voice said again, clearly. This time she knew who it came from. Chase. A warning. From Varuna.
Get out, Evelyn!
Evelyn grabbed the stone of Metria and the bottles of treated water and stuffed them in her robes. She raced into the hall and through the gathering room, snuffing out candles as she went. She had to find Hesam and make it to the beach where they had stashed the dory. She heard heavy footsteps above her, and realized that the intrudersâExorians, no doubtâwere on the roof of the cavern itself.
She heard several thwacks outside the larger openings in the rock face of the cliff. Exorians were lowering themselves from the ledge along the outside of the cavern walls, toward the windows. They would be inside any second now.
She sprinted through the narrow hallway, using memory to guide her in the dark. There was no sign of Hesam and no time to look for her. She made straight for the beach and the dory they had prepared for escape. As she crossed the few open yards, a robed figure rushed out from the shadows.
âHesam!â she yelped in surprise and relief.
Hesam put her finger to her lips, and gestured for Evelyn to get in the dory; then she pushed it out into the lagoon.
